Online Instruction
Starting Wednesday, March 18, 2020, USF moved all instruction online until the end of the semester.
Online instruction will be broken into a mix of asynchronous versus synchronous activities.
-
The term asynchronous refers to activities that do not occur at the same time for all participants. For example, this includes students watching pre-recorded videos at their own pace and use Piazza for questions.
- The term synchronous refers to activities that do occur at the same time for all participants. For example, this includes the instructor and students joining a live online Zoom meeting at the same time.
Both types of activities are provided to accommodate geographically-dispersed students with varying time zones and limited access to resources such as reliable high-speed internet.
Tuesday Lectures
Tuesday lecture will be replaced with asynchronous activities. Specifically:
-
Approximately 90 to 120 minutes of pre-recorded videos.
-
Approximately 15 to 30 minutes of quizzes or discussion.
This content will be made available by the Tuesday lecture time at the latest, and should be viewed/completed before the Thursday lecture time at the latest.
Thursday Lectures
Thursday lecture will be replaced with synchronous activities. Specifically:
-
Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes of recorded livestream discussion, broken into two sessions:
-
Session 1: Thursdays 4:35pm – 5:20pm
-
Session 2: Thursdays 5:35pm – 6:20pm
Each session will start with approximately 15 minutes of informal Q&A, followed by 30 minutes of recapping the lecture content.
-
-
Additional interaction via Zoom polls or Canvas discussion.
Students are strongly encouraged to attend both livestream sessions. Students must attend at least one 45 minute livestream session -or- participate in an asynchronous discussion on Canvas most weeks.
